Lake Tenkiller
Tenkiller Ferry Lake Located on the Illinois River a few miles south of Tahlequah, Tenkiller Ferry Lake lies in the heart of the Cookson Hills and reaches more than 25 miles up the river into Sequoyah and Cherokee Counties. The lake has a surface area of 12,900 acres with an average pool of 51 feet at a normal (power) pool elevation of 632 feet above mean sea level. Maximum depth is 152 feet.
Construction of Tenkiller Ferry Lake, started in June 1947. The spillway, outlet works, and tunnels were completed in 1951, and embankment closure occurred in May 1952. Impoundment of the power pool began in July 1952. The project was completed for full flood control operation in July 1953. Installation of the two hydropower units was completed in December 1953 and power generation was initiated. Work on the repair and extension of the spillway apron was initiated in July 1960 and completed in August 1961.

Nestled in the Cookson Hills of eastern Oklahoma, this body of water is known as "Oklahoma's Clear Water Wonderland" and its reputation is well deserved. The lake is well known by fisherman, pleasure boaters and scuba divers as the best place for water-based activities. Just the fact that there are 10 marinas and over 20 launching ramps here should tell you something.
