Clinton Lake
Located just eight miles from the University of Kansas (Lawrence Ks.), Clinton Lake is snuggled among the rolling Osage Questas woodlands.
Congress authorized Clinton Lake in 1962 and funds were first appropriated for construction in 1971. Nearly $55 million was needed to complete the project. In 1977 initial filling of Clinton Lake began. To improve fishing potential, the lake was filled slowly over a three-year period. The multipurpose pool level was reached in 1980.
The 7,000-acre Clinton Reservoir provides clear water for boating, fishing, and swimming. Deer, rabbit, squirrel, quail, and a variety of other wildlife thrive in the 11,000 acres of wildlife area surrounding the lake, including nesting bald eagles.
The Clinton Park comprises about 1,500 acres. From the park, photographers, naturalists, horseback riders, hikers, and campers all find a pleasant base for their activities.
A Full service marina accommodates the
needs of boaters. While water skiing is an obvious attraction to the area, cross-country snow skiers also find Clinton State Park an ideal spot for winter recreation. With 240 electrical hookups, 16 boat ramp lanes, restrooms and showers, and a marina, Clinton offers campers and boaters all they could ask for.
Sailboat operators have plenty of room to maneuver on the main body of the lake. Several sailing regattas are held each year. Windsurfers also find Clinton Lake to their liking with windy days quite common in Kansas.
