Grand Lake of the Cherokees This beautiful Oklahoma lake was created by the Grand River Dam Authority, between December 30, 1938, and March 21, 1940, when low cost depression-era labor was abundant. Pensacola Dam was the first hydroelectric facility in the state of Oklahoma. It is located between the communities of Langley and Disney, spanning over a mile across the Grand River Valley. The Penascola Dam is the longest multiple arch dam in the world. The massive reservoir holds 59,200 surface acres of water at an average surface level of 740 feet above sea level. The shore line is 1,300 miles long with over 60 miles winding through the foothills of the Ozarks. Having 46,500 surface acres of water which is ideal for boating, skiing, fishing and swimming. It is popular with sailboat enthusiasts wishing to take advantage of the prevailing winds which blow in the direction the lake lies from the southwest to northeast.
